In 2020 the Department of Education acknowledged that an additional 300 000 beds are required to accommodate the nation’s students, although industry experts consider this a conservative figure.

In the midst of a pandemic students across the African continent are faced with a pandemic of their own, a student accommodation shortage. The South African student accommodation sector is not immune to this and is currently also facing a ‘second wave’ of #FeesMustFall.

For universities, the biggest challenge to providing student housing is the cost of building and maintenance. To address this, we need to find ways to provide accommodation at a low cost without compromising quality.

This Freedom Day, YIPA engaged with key student accommodation players, Ndumiso Davidson the CEO of South Point and Alexandria Procter, CEO of DigsConnect, on navigating accommodation shortages and trying to find sustainable solutions.
